usually arising from unfair taxation, onerous rents or threats to farmers'
livelihoods. In most cases prior to the uprisings people's complaints
were either ignored or suppressed.
The rapid social changes brought about by industrialization and rapid economic development resulted in the rise of new social movements, new forms of protest and increased demands for accountability of the state and for popular participation.
