The International Covenants

The International Covenants are treaties and therefore are legally binding on those states that ratify them. It is important to realize that all of the rights in the Declaration are codified in the two Covenants.

The Covenants have been the basis for the drafting of a number of human rights treaties designed to clarify the rights as they relate to specific sectors of society and to thematic concerns. The major human rights treaties are the

  • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination
  • Convention Against Torture
  • Convention on the Rights of the Child
  • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women
  • Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Worker and Members of Their Families
