The
Hong Kong Catholic Commission For Labour Affairs (HKCCLA)
is circulating a joint statement to garner support for a reasonable minimum
wage level in Hong Kong. To support their effort in alleviating
poverty in Hong Kong, ACPP would like to invite you to sign their
“Catholic Support for a Minimum Wage Level of $33 an Hour in Hong Kong” statement which will be published in
local HK newspapers.
According
to the Catholic Social Teachings (Caritas in Veritate),
the advance of society is not only measured by economic development, but
more importantly, by whether an individual can lead a respectable life and
have the opportunities to develop his full potential. Hence, in a genuine prosperous society,
there should be a fair distribution of wealth and the government is
responsible to ensure enjoyment of fair and reasonable wages by all. The legislation of a minimum wage of $33
an hour is one of the steps to achieve a just society and that enables a
worker to earn enough to maintain his and his family’s needs.
The abovementioned statement is part of the “Family
wage” campaign organized by HKCCLA. For more information about
the campaign and its relationship with Church teachings, please go to the
web site of HKCCLA <http://www.hkccla.org.hk/index.asp?content=care/care>.
The signed statement will be placed in Apple Daily / Ming Pao (Chinese newspapers in HK) on 21 June 2010.
How to Support:
Sign
the joint statement (click to DOWNLOAD) and return it to the
HKCCLA before 10:00am on Thursday, 17 June 2010 (if you need translation
about the joint statement form, please call us at 2714 5123 or the HKCCLA
directly at 2772 5918).
Your support will
strengthen the position of the Church and reflect the support of lay and
religious faithful on the worker’s issue. We hope it can also raise awareness of
other Christians on the issue.
Thank you for your kind attention and support.
