Enhancing Advocacy in a Time of Crisis

“Better Advocacy Using the Rights-Based Approach”
ACPP Training Workshop Series

(Hong Kong Only)

April to June 2009

The current financial crisis is presenting new challenges to advocates of social justice/human rights.  In Hong Kong, social injustices –unemployment, discrimination, impoverishment, to name a few – will become even more evident.  While the calls for social justice and genuine democracy may increase, for the same reason, there will be greater resistance from those in power.

The need is there to enhance our existing advocacy skills to respond to these challenges.

The Asian Center for the Progress of Peoples (ACPP) and the Human Rights Council of Australia (HRCA) have carried out numerous joint trainings for social justice advocates in Asia on the use of the human rights-based approach (RBA) as a tool to develop more accurate analyses, effective strategies and appropriate tactics to deal with similar challenges.

As part of our staff development this year, the ACPP will be holding a training workshop series on “Better Advocacy Using the Rights-Based Approach”.

The main resource person and facilitator will be Mr. André Frankovits who has gained an international reputation in the field – please see the attached biographical note.

The training workshop will be open to a maximum of 10 other social justice/human rights advocates in Hong Kong.

Registration/Training Fee (non refundable and non transferable):

HK$500 for the compulsory three full-day sessions,
HK$600 for four full-day sessions.

The training workshop will be carried out in English.

The workshop series will consist of four full-day sessions (9:00am to 5:00pm).  A major emphasis of the workshop will be on participatory learning – group discussions, exercises, case-studies.  By the end of the workshop, participants will be equipped to come up with better tactics and strategies for their advocacy work.

Due to the nature of the sessions, it will be compulsory for participants to fully attend the first 3 days; no part-time participants will be accepted.

Tentative Agenda:
Day 1 – Our common challenges, human rights as a tool for clearer analysis
Day 2 – Campaigning using the rights-based approach, some successful experiences
Day 3 – Developing strategies using the RBA, identifying relevant tactics to reach our objectives
Day 4 – Applying the lessons of the three days to our own practice

If you are interested to participate, please fill in the attached Application Form and return to the ACPP [subject: RBA Training Workshop 09] on or before Friday, 3 April 2009.  Once your application has been accepted, you will be informed about your acceptance with other relevant details on the training workshop.
