In January 2001,
Hotline issued UA010110(1), a campaign to support
enactment of laws against domestic violence in Japan.
According to local sources and the Daily Yomiuri, an
English newspaper in Japan, the anti-Domestic
Violence bill has been unanimously approved by the
Japanese House of Representatives and became law on 7
April 2001. The law is designed to protect not only
married couples, but also divorced men and women. It
can fine, imprison and ban the abusers from the
victims' home and office if the victims are in danger
of being seriously injured. Although it fell short of
objectives of the advocacy groups, victims of the
domestic violence can at least expect to claim for
protection against their abusers in October. Local
groups continue to raise mass awareness and promote
outlines to authorities and hospitals to assist the
victims better.
Together with the
local victims, individuals and groups working against
domestic violence, Hotline would like to thank you
for your concern and help to their cause.
