Hotline issued an Urgent Appeal in May 2003 for
the release of four leaders
of Anjuman Muzareen Punjab (Tenants Association
Punjab or AMP) who were
arrested by the Okara police in April. The AMP
represents thousands of
tenant farmers at the government owned agricultural
farms, including
military farms. In the last two years six activists
of the AMP have been
killed in their struggle for ownership rights to the
land that they have
cultivated for over 100 years. Legal
recognition of their ownership rights
was promised to them by the government in 1999 but
has not been implemented.
According to the local source, the last of the AMP
leaders was released on
bail on 6 November 2003. Some of the cases
against them have been decided
in their favour.
