The three suspects of the torture and murder of
Catholic youth, Javed Anjum in May 2004 were
sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by the District
Court on 3 March 2006.
They reportedly tortured the boy for 5 days in April
2004 in an attempt of forced conversion, before
handing him to the police to falsely accuse him of
robbery. According to the medical report, Javed Anjum
died on 2 May, from 26 injuries resulting from
torture.
According to the family lawyer, the sentence handed
down by the district judge of Toba Tek Singh is
significant but not satisfactory. The courtroom was
in a tense situation as it was full of students from
the Islamic seminary where the torture took place.
Hotline Asia issued SUA040518(1) in May 2004 to urge
for timely action and investigation on the forced
conversion, torture and murder of Javed Anjum, as
well as to support the local efforts for long term
measures to root out religious intolerance of
minorities and to guarantee equality of rights and
opportunities the society based on justice, peace and
human rights.
