Lack of Action on Forced Conversion and Torture Case SUA040518(1)

The three suspects of the torture and murder of Catholic youth, Javed Anjum in May 2004 were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by the District Court on 3 March 2006.

They reportedly tortured the boy for 5 days in April 2004 in an attempt of forced conversion, before handing him to the police to falsely accuse him of robbery. According to the medical report, Javed Anjum died on 2 May, from 26 injuries resulting from torture.

According to the family lawyer, the sentence handed down by the district judge of Toba Tek Singh is significant but not satisfactory. The courtroom was in a tense situation as it was full of students from the Islamic seminary where the torture took place.

Hotline Asia issued SUA040518(1) in May 2004 to urge for timely action and investigation on the forced conversion, torture and murder of Javed Anjum, as well as to support the local efforts for long term measures to root out religious intolerance of minorities and to guarantee equality of rights and opportunities the society based on justice, peace and human rights.

Mr. Ghulam Rasul, one of the suspects of the murder and torture of Christian youth, Javed Anjum, has been arrested He will be tried under Article 302 of Criminal Law for murder, which is not bailable.

In May, SUA040518(1) was issued to call for timely action and investigation against perpetrators of the forced conversion to Islam, torture and death of Javed Anjum, and to express concern on the lack of justice for minorities.
