Release Detained Woman and her Sick Infant from Jail   UA050801(4)

3 October 2005

Hotline Asia issued UA050801(4) in August 2005, expressing concern on the prolonged detention of Ms. Luisa Encomio, causing her physical condition and the health of her 10-month old child, to be seriously affected. It urges the authorities to release Ms. Encomio immediately for humanitarian reason.

With the joint efforts of local organizations, such as Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFD) and Children's Legal Rights and Development Center (CLRD), and the international network, we are delighted to announce that Ms. Encomio was finally released on 9 September 2005, under the order of the Investigating Prosecutor.

TFD and CLRD had been active in the gathering of evidence and witnesses for Ms. Luisa Econmio. The Investigating Prosecutor proceeded with his investigation and concluded that complaints were all hearsay, thus, no probable cause to believe that Ms. Encomio had indeed committed the crime of attempted murder. She is now active in the campaign of NGOs in Mindoro for the release of other political prisoners, who, like her, were set up or framed up by the police and military.
