Background:

In 2004, the ACPP, together with the Human Rights Council of Australia (HRCA) ran a national training on the Rights-based Approach (or RBA) for the National Commission for Justice, Peace and Development of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India. The Training was partially supported by the ACPP. Fr. James Mascarenhas SJ (Fr. James) was one of over 30 participants of the Training and was interviewed in late 2006, when the ACPP was trying to evaluate the effectiveness of its training programmes.

The 2004 Training was designed by Andre Frankovits (Andre, also the main resource person, of the HRCA), James Tan (James, the facilitator, of the ACPP) and Katalee Sikarangkhura (Kat, another facilitator, of the ACPP).

[Father James: what he thinks his “vocation” is]

I think 3 things stand out more: as a priest, lawyer and an activist. Ok, I am still an amateur in other things, but 3 things have been standing out in my life. I enjoy being a priest, enjoy being an activist, and I enjoy being a lawyer also. And I find that all these 3 roles really helped me to go down to the people and to really work committedly with them.
